Cinco De Mayo Regatta
Indian Lake Yacht Club
May 3-4, 2008
I-20 sailors met at the Indian Lake Yacht Club for it’s 2008 season opener, the Cinco De Mayo Regatta. Sailors started arriving and setting up on Friday, and members of the ILYC were there to meet, greet, and take them to host housing for the evening. By around 7:30 PM, most of the sailors went out together for dinner, and reconvened at the yacht club house to get caught up after a long winter and talk sailing.

On Saturday morning, the winds were predicted to blow 15 to 25 with some higher gusts. As the sailors finished registering, we had 11 boats on the line and sailors from no less than 8 states including Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Everyone was glad to see Alec and Anita from Michigan sail together on a borrowed boat, thanks to the generosity of the Indian Lake I-20 fleet. The younger crowd found excitement in the I-20 class too as Juniors were crew on 4 boats, ID-4, S-17, WA-38, and F-314 and skippered on WA-38.

Spring Fling Regatta Report
The Indian Lake Spring Fling was sailed in some tough conditions that resulted in one race on Saturday before being blown out and one race on Sunday in some very light and shifting conditions that took us to the last race time deadline. All in all it was a very successful event. I'm working on a regatta write-up.

In the meantime, Brook has posted the results, some video, and photos on their website (link below). The Indian Lake Yacht Club once again were fantastic and generous hosts. The trophies were fantastic and they had door prizes that rivaled any regatta I have ever attended. These guys did a lot of work to put this on at the price offered.

We had 12 teams participate from 7 different states - Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania - We also had 4 boats sailing with junior sailors. Joe Ewing sailed with his 13 year old son, Cole, Ben Shaevits sailed with local Indian Lake junior, Tyler (don't know last name), Wawasee team Ben and John Herdrich, and David Crosby sailed with his daughters, Malina and Megan.

Results, photos, and video here.

Message from the Commodore
Happy Thanksgiving I-20 Sailors,

As we celebrate this Thanksgiving, I expect we all have plenty to be thankful for. For one, I'm thankful that we have the opportunity to sail with such fine people and at such beautiful venues and on just a fantastic boat. This year was filled with tough competition and the venues were such that everyone had an opportunity to attend at least one of the big regattas. Looking at some of your club websites, it looks like your club racing was pretty good too in that the individual race day results seemed to vary - an indication of tough competition. We experienced some growth during the season and even added several new sailors at Nationals. What a great year. As I think back on all the fun we had, I, for one, am getting wound up about 2008.

We have some great plans in the works: The I-20 class intends to return to Strictly Sail. We have an excellent spread of venues planned for 2008, and we're already planning hard for the 2008 10th Anniversary National Championships in cooperation with the Green Lake Yacht Club. Thanks to generous donations from some class members, the 2008 National Championships will be like no other. And while I don't want to spill the beans until we've properly completed the Notice of Race, be assured, you need to mark your calendars and plan on attending (September 19, 20, & 21, Green Lake, WI). It is our goal to make this a 40+ boat regatta - and if we can do that it will be the largest and most competitive National Championship ever. And to highlight the racing, we're planning some special entertainment in a very special place. And thanks to the generous donations we've already been promised, we'll be able to do all of this and still will be cost conscious and keep the registration fees reasonable.
Do we have your interest?
If you haven't already, on behalf of the officers of the National Inland 20 Sailing Association, we hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving.

New! I-20 Tuning Guide

Ahoy I-20 sailors,

There is no better way to wrap up a sailing season than with a fantastic National Championship Regatta.  The Carlyle Sailing Association hosted an event that was truly phenomenal with outstanding organization and personal efforts by the Crosby and Sepanski families .

The Carlyle Sailing Association is a perfect venue for one design racing and while the winds were too shifty and light for racing on Friday, the racing on Saturday and Sunday was tremendously competitive and FUN!  This truly was a regatta to be remembered.

The I-20 class has been and is all about great racing in a great boat all at an affordable price.  This regatta was an incredible value with no less than 14 meals - including a steak feed with shrimp cocktails and all the fixings, T-shirts, trophies to 10 places for skipper and crew, and an America's Cup judge as PRO for only $170.  And that was the late fee!  Completely amazing - and all because of the hard work and dedication by the Carlyle I-20 sailors.  These folks deserve a standing ovation for this one.

In race summary, we have several excellent articles about the event that are now available for you to read:
Destination One Design, sponsored by Quantum, have two articles.  An interview with regatta champion skipper, Ian Schillebeeckx, and a write-up from Zack Clayton.

We also have an excellent go fast article provided by Ian and David.

I'm also proud to announce a formal I-20 Tuning Guide provided by Quantum Sails.

Finally, we have a new slate of officers.  Grant Frautschi is our Rear Commodore, Aaron Lynn has been re-elected as Vice Commodore, Joe Terry has been elected Commodore, and Justin Bolles has been elected Secretary-Treasurer to fill the remaining year of that seat vacated by Joe Terry.

The officers are working to finalize the 2008 regatta schedule.  We will have the schedule completed by Jan 1.   As of this time the tentative schedule is as follows:
  • May 3, 4 - Indian Lake, Ohio - Spring Fling
  • June 28, 29 - Either the ILYA invite, or if a venue is not firmed up by Jan 1, a non ILYA I-20 regatta very likely at Lake Carlyle, IL
  • August 9-16 - ILYA Championship - Lake Okoboji, IA
  • September 19-21 - NISSA National Championship, 10 year Anniversary event - Green Lake, WI
I am excited to be serving as an officer with such a great Board of Directors and we're here to serve the class, so if you have questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact any or all of us.

Sincerely,
Joe Terry

Nationals Report:
How Ian Schillebeeckx Helped to Make My Boat Go Fast

Via David Crosby: "I asked Skipper Ian Schillebeeckxhim to share with us how he made my boat go so fast. I have added some "David Notes" to his article and my own section at the end regarding things I noticed and what I was doing as crew. I hope people find it helpful. I know that as a "middle-of-the-fleet" skipper, I crave this kind of information." Click here to read article (pdf file).

2007 Inland 20 National Championship

By Zack Clayton
The 2007 Inland 20 National Championship and Junior National Championship was hosted by Carlyle Sailing Association, September 28-30, 2007. This year twenty-one teams came to compete at their National Championship. There were also six teams that competed in the one day Junior National Championship held Saturday afternoon. The Inland 20 is a family friendly boat that has a carbon mast and asymmetrical spinnaker. A crew of two makes this boat a ton of fun in all conditions and the 2007 edition had the full range of racing conditions. Windward Boatworks was on hand as well as Jim Gluek from Quantum Inland Sails to help with rigging and tuning all weekend long, which is always a welcoming thought to all of the competitors. WHO IS COMING THIS YEAR?

I20 Nationals Information

I20 Junior Nationals
Via David Crosby:

Carlyle Sailing Association has at least ten qualified junior sailors that would love an opportunity to skipper an I-20 in the 2007 Junior Nationals. The junior nationals will consist of several short races on Saturday, Sept. 29th in the late afternoon. Only the skipper has to be a junior. The crew can be any age (= you).

This is your chance to promote the Inland 20 class. Dedicating your boat and you or your crew for one afternoon to sail with a kid could some day lead these kids to boat ownership in our class.

If you are willing to loan your boat to a junior sailor (with you as crew or just the boat) please email to me.

If you are in need of crew for the Nationals, these kids would also be available to crew.

2007 ILYA Invite at Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
Fond du Lac Sailing Club went above and beyond hosting the 2007 ILYA I-20 Invitational. With shifty winds the race committee set 3 great long courses. George Winter and John Hayashi looked to be the ones to beat with 2 wins the first day, but Joe and LaCinda Terry showed that consistency is what wins regattas!

Indian Lake Yacht Club Spring Fling 2007 Report
Photos Coming Soon!

Via Joe Terry: Great sailing and the sign of things to come. For those who traveled to Indian Lake it was not just a good regatta, but an exceptional one. For those that did not travel this time, Indian Lake should be on your list of events to attend.

Fifteen I-20 Teams representing six different states took to the water for a fantastic weekend of sailing. The Indian Lake Yacht Club turned on the hospitality.
The club was all I-20’s for the entire weekend as both the sailors and club provided everything and anything that a sailor could need or want. A number of the visiting sailors stayed at local club member homes, the meals were great, and the social atmosphere was perfect. We just can’t say enough about the generosity of the ILYC members.

We were gifted with good winds, a touch of cool weather, then warmer later in the day on Saturday. On Sunday we had a stiff breeze and rocking puffs which made for exciting rides.

The ILYC put on a nice lunch and awards ceremony and after awards and eats, it was time to pack up and say so long to the Spring Fling and hello to a great start to the 2007 I-20 season!

What made this weekend surprising was the new sailors which came to the event and also how they performed on the course. New I-20 sailors Joe and Cole Ewing opened up some serious eyes as they won a solid race by a landslide. They were constantly up front and sailing fast. I believe now they are on everyone’s radar screen and believe me, they will only get faster. New Lake DuBay sailor Rich Barker had a good regatta as well, placing in the top half of the fleet and having a couple really good races, it looks like Joe Terry will get the competition up on the home lake now!

For the old-timers things got moved around as well. We saw some great sailing from George Winter and crew Eric Hall as they won the heavy air race pretty easy on Sunday. This could be the team to beat now when the wind is up. Joe and LaCinda Terry sailed well and showed something pretty exciting: they now are reeling people in at will. Just ask the people they reeled in if they are fast. Oh, and yes they do have a shiny new orange boat! John Spargo and Jim Brust sailed well winning a race and staying in the hunt most of the regatta. As for the regatta winners Grant Frautschi and Carolyn Curry, they sailed consistently at toward the front of the fleet and made very few mistakes. Others had good races throughout the regatta as well, Ben Shaevitz had a stellar last race on Saturday hooking the last big puff to race through to almost catch the lead group.

The social stuff on Saturday was relaxed and laid back as people from Carlyle David Crosby and Preston Haglin talked about the Nationals and also the upcoming Leukemia Cup. The other hot topics were costume selections for the Nationals as we were ready to assign the Schecks, the Howells, the Bates, Mary Anne and the professor. For all the others you will just have to wait and see. The food was great thanks Paula, Bobbie, Sandy, Mimi, and Alec and maybe a few others that helped out but we missed.

The most exciting and fulfilling part of this regatta was the fact that everyone was in a race at sometime or another. The fact is that everyone in the fleet is getting better and mixing up standings and positions . There is no defined given fast sailor - everyone is fast. As the Sepanskis, the Bolles and a few others settle in to their new boats expect the standings to continue to shuffle.

As was evident, everyone can win a race, and no lead is ever safe in I-20 racing.

Via I 20 Class Secretary Joe Terry: "The news letter includes information about the Spring Fling. If everyone could help promote the event in their area clubs we should have a great event.
We've had 100% growth of our I-20 fleet on Lake DuBay this winter and expect 100% participation at the Spring Fling. Can you guys match that? HA!"

Steve Talks About Mr. Air Particle
The Hayashi record keeping system on Hubbard St. should be more likely compared the Library of Congress for 20' spinnaker rigged boats. Maybe he is a historian after all! In any case as John was researching past boat sales from over 10 years ago he stumbled across an article about Mr. Wind, Ms. Luck, and light air sailing written by Steve Scheck. The article has been slightly edited and is very good. Enjoy and thanks Steve for the hints.

Fall colors at Indian Lake!
By John Hayashi
Every year we make the trip down to Indian Lake in the fall. There are many reasons why but the best is perhaps the chance to spend more time with the sailors. The Indian Lake I-20 fleet just takes you in and shows you the best weekend of sailing around. This year we had a great Saturday of sailing with a lot of emphasis on starting and getting out of the blocks. With a different race winner in every race.

What is unique about this weekend is the fact that all outside coaching and help is welcomed and allowed while racing. This allows for sailors to absorb more information quicker and on the spot. It also makes it easier to learn as you gain a better feel for the sail shape changes as you see it happening. The end result is everyone gets faster together!

This year we had John Sepanski and David Crosby from Lake Carlyle, Joe Terry from Lake Dubay and most all of the Indian Lake fleet got out on the water at some point during the weekend. Bob and Kenny Bolles showed up from Wawasee and showed off their new boat
and won a couple of races as well. Watch out for the Bolles next season, they were wicked fast.

Saturday night we had a BBQ with all the extra's, thanks go out to Paula and Bill, Brook, Susan, and John King. The entertainment of old sailing stories plus new ones kept the
dinner going for some time.

Sunday was not to promising until people started packing up boats. Of course the wind filled in and a bunch of others did go out. With a nice 8-12 mph breeze people were scooting up and down the lake enjoying the last of the summer weather and beautiful conditions. The Indian Lake fleet provided great accommodations, the Young family put up many of the out of town boats which they deserve a big thank you for doing. Also thanks go out to Tom and Susan Ewing for doing great race committee work and finally to Paula McKinney now Monsma on organizing all the rest of the weekend one week before her wedding. Now that is dedication.

We hope to see everyone down at Indian Lake for the spring regatta, as always it should be a blast.

We all think about how to promote our great boat and here is an artical that Geoff Catlin thought summed it up!

The Value of Your Boat Depends on the Success of Your Class
By Patty Lawrence
Patty Lawrence is a past President of the Thistle Class Association and the current Secretary Treasurer. She takes a great deal of pleasure serving on the board of US SAILING in addition to co-chairing US SAILING’s One Design Sailing-Symposium.

"The value of your boat depends on the success of your class" was perhaps one of the best quotes from the US SAILING One Design Sailing Symposium held in Annapolis last November.

One of the recurring success stories from growing fleets at the ODSS was that they have boats to lend to prospective sailors. Maybe the fleet owns a boat or there is someone around willing to lend one. Often the fleet spark plug has a spare boat for sale on hand. The bottom line is simple-if a prospective sailors walks onto the dock, they have access to the fun.

Fon du Lac I20 Sailor Kevin Gratton Named Named Wind Surfer of the Year

How many I 20 sailors are in this picture?
Mimi, John Anne, Kevin, Aaron, Andy, just about everybody!!!

KEVIN GRATTON NAMED US WINDSURFING:
2006 WINDSURFER OF THE YEAR

The US Windsurfing Board of Directors takes this opportunity to name Kevin
Gratton the 2006 Windsurfer of the Year.  At the same time we thank him for
many years of dedicated teaching and promotion of windsurfing in the U.S.
Kevin was influential in the initial years of US Windsurfing and served on
its board.  He was also instrumental in the formation of MOWIND. (Midwest
Organization of Windsurfers)

In the early years of MOWIND, Kevin and many of his friends took the idea
for MOWIND and made it grow.  About 1990 John Weiss, Ken Wruk, Melissa
Spoerke, Steve Vande Corput, Marlin Meitzen, Robin Shaw, Keith Speer, Rod
Clevenger, Barbara Fisher, Doug Wilford, Mike Derr and many others ran the
organization, formulated the early guidelines, and organized most of the
events.  Today, MOWIND promotes and help coordinate the annual Midwest
windsurfing events.  They help schedule regattas so as to avoid conflicts,
provide a newsletter, insurance information, and a standardized set of
rules and scoring methods.

MOWIND has grown through the years with the addition of new members each
year. Lately it is growing because of the efforts of a few new enthusiasts,
namely, Jeff Koeberl who ran the Bradford Beach Jam this year, Arden
Anderson who started a MOWIND Yahoo Group for windsurfers to talk to each
other, and Dr. Jack Wiley who improved the MOWIND scoring program making it
a model for all-event scoring.  The new program has made regatta scoring
extremely fast and effortless and has encouraged some new events in the
Midwest. (MOWIND stands for Midwest Organization of Windsurfers)

Memorable moments:
Kevin credits his younger brother, Andy, for getting him into windsurfing.
In the fall of 1982, Kevin, a sailor and avid water-skier, saw Andy
windsurfing on a Wayler on Lake Winnebago in white cap conditions.  He
instantly saw the excitement of waterskiing and his love of sailing in the
new sport.  Kevin asked to use Andy’s board and that was the beginning of
his love affair with windsurfing. By 1989 he held the Mistral World
Championship in his class.

By 1986 Kevin had his own windsurfing business, Wind Power Windsurfing on
Lake Winnebago in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.  He continues to teach and has
become an icon in the windsurfing business.

One of Kevin’s favorite talking points is about the great feeling a
windsurfing instructor gets when he watches new students improve.  He met
Melissa Spoerke when she won the Sport Fleet at his Walleye Weekend
National Regatta.  Eventually, he coached her Olympic Campaign finishing
with third place at the Olympic Trials, Savannah Georgia in 1996.

As a youth Kevin was a sailor in the Fond du Lac Yacht Club youth program.
Now he sails his I-20 scow and teaches youth sailing lessons at the Fond du
Lac Yacht Club.  He is in charge of the youth program and introduced a
second level for advanced Laser sailors.  Additionally, he has introduced
windsurfing to these youthful  sailors ……… following in his footsteps.

Kevin runs low-cost windsurfing clinics for children and has recently
started a new “women’s windsurfing night” in Fond du Lac.  He calls it the
“wives revenge team” as most of them used to sit on the beach watching
their spouses compete.  Soon they will be in competition against their
husbands and Kevin will enjoy every minute of the competition.

Additionally, Kevin takes groups of windsurfers to Hatteras twice a year.
In the spring he has a two week clinic for intermediate windsurfers and in
the fall he invites the more advanced windsurfers.  Many fly into Norfolk
and then drive a rental car to Hatteras. Kevin brings the equipment. More
info at the website: www.windpowerwindsurfing.com

Kevin continues to teach/compete and will be a driving force in the
windsurfing community in the years to come.  We congratulate him and wish
him continued success.

2006 Nationals T-Shirts at ILYA Championships
The first run of t-shirts made their debut at the Big Inlands. Some believe that you should not wear a regatta t-shirt at that event- even if it is the only clean shirt you have. That is why we passed them out to some or our pre-registered sailors before the
next regatta in September. You might get a closer look at the shirt around you club as I know a few went to Mendota, Wauwasee, Bear Lake, and Fond du Lac.

If you want this great shirt, please contact us.

Crossing The Bar

Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross'd the bar.
