Fond Du Lac was a Great Weekend!
By: Pat Flemming
Posted On: 6/7/2011
Saturday light and shifty but managed to get two races in, the race management team worked hard with the wind shifts and the day ended with Aaron Lynn in first with 2 bullets, Dave Whealon in 2nd with two 3rds, and Jack Boatman in third, with a 6 and a 2. Sunday morning looked outstanding, Again a great job by the race management team, boats were in by 9 am and a nice NNE was at about 10. Then we started racing the wind stopped. By the third race the wind was back and it was on. Jack sailed great all day Sunday and in the end took it from Aaron by 1 point. What a weekend, great food, great Rum, great racing and weather. Thanks to the Race management team, I do this myself and they were challenged by the wind and did a great job with the conditions, thanks to all the sponsors and the volunteers who put up boats and time to help out. See you all in Iowa. June 11th early registration ends get it in at the ILYA web site.

Spring Fling a Great Success
By: jbolles
Posted On: 5/26/2011
Lets see, what could a sailor possibly want? - Great Weather? - highs were in the 70s with sunshine - check
- Good Wind - morning racing on both Saturday and Sunday had winds around 12 MPH - check
- Competitive Racing - 8 of the 9 boats that sailed won an individual race - check
- Good Food - Pulled Pork BBQ, Steak Dinner, ummm yeah - check
- Good Friends - The last light didn't go out in the club on Friday Night until a keg of Bud Light had been emptied - so check
Basically Wawasee had it all this year. The Weather Gods gave us great wind, warm weather, and the group at Wawasee gave us great racing and even better food. With this being the I-20s first foray into team racing, the large and well trained race committee did an excellent job getting everyone up to speed on the new rules. That meant 3 minute start sequences, port rounding at the windward mark, and "falling on your sword" to win the team race.
It took until the second set of round robins in the afternoon for the racers to really figure out what team racing was all about. But once everyone got the hang of things, man was it a good time. The last day of racing consisted of several head to head battles, from the 3 minute gun through the last boat finishing. At several points it looked like "three simultaneous match races" on the course according to a race committee judge.
All that were involved agreed that the team racing format was a success. Each boat started 12 races over the course of the weekend, and I think it is safe to say the final upwind leg of each race consisted of several tacking duals. With each racing only lasting about 15 minutes, one wrong move could spell doom for any boat taking too big of a risk.
A small photo album from the weekend can be seen here:
See you all in Iowa!

Spring Fling NOR Posted
By: jbolles
Posted On: 4/22/2011
Its that time of year again! Thaw out the gear, unroll the sails, and get ready for the annual I-20 Spring Fling regatta, May 21st and 22nd!
This year we attempt to knock off the rust at the scene of the 2009 National Championship – Lake Wawasee, IN. As always there will be great wind, great friends, great beer, and great food. Well, we can't guarantee the wind part, but the rest is always true!
For those of you that did make it to Nationals at Wawasee last time, you will surely remember the steak dinner from Saturday night. Well, the same cook is back in the building, so we will need a good headcount in advance of the event to prepare, please get your registrations in early! Registration deadline is May 15th, which is also the housing deadline. For Nationals we were able to put all sailors up in local housing, and that same hospitality will be extended for Spring Fling. Let us know as soon as possible so we can alert the locals who they will be hosting.
Use the "Spring Fling" link above to find the NOR and fill out the registration forms.
Too add a twist to this year's event, we will be doing team racing. Boats will be divided into teams of three on Saturday morning, followed by a brief seminar reviewing team racing rules and principals. The regatta will consist of head to head matchups between teams, with races lasting 10-15 minutes each. At the end of the event, the team with the best record takes home the hardware! It should be a great event. For more information on team sailing, please see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_racing.
See you on the water!

Steve Yost - I20 National & Inland Champion Passes Away
By: ABersie
Posted On: 4/11/2011
The Inland20 sailing community is sad to announce the passing of past Champion and good friend, Steve Yost on Thursday April 7th, 2011. Steve was an active Mendota Yacht Club sailor, and one of a handful of boats who first converted to asymmetrical spinnakers starting the new I-20 class. Steve also holds the honors of being both the first class National Champion (Lake Castle Rock, 1998) and the first I-20 to win an ILYA Championship (Lake Minnetonka, 2001). Steve’s boat, Pizazz H-632 was always recognizable for its red spinnaker out on the far reaches of the race course, ever so slyly finding his way to the lead!
Rosanne Scholl – Past Crew
“I'm remembering the time I broke Steve's spreader a few hours before the ILYA gun at Lake Geneva. He towed Pizazz to Zenda, got Buddy Melges and Gary Jobson to fix it, rigged the boom while being towed to the line, and never said even one bad thing to his troublemaking crew. I thank Steve for teaching me racing and so many other things along the way.”
Jamie Gwidt – Past Crew
“Steve was the calmest, most persistent sailor I’ve ever raced with. He was a perfectionist but so calm and chill you never would have known it. Many times after an MYC race, we’d come in and Bob Yost would have lemonade to greet us and hear about the race while we rolled sails. I loved scow sailing with Steve; it was fun and easy like Sunday morning.”
Carolyn Curry – MYC Sailor
“I won't forget being amazed by the way Steve could regularly give the other I20 sailors a run for their money out on the water despite having one of the older I20s. Just once again proves, it's not all about the equipment. I'll also always remember his fondness for banging the corners -so many times I'd see him out there and it looked like HORRIBLE decision, but then the winds would shift, or a great puff would come down one side of the lake and he would suddenly be right up front in the heat of things with the rest of the fleet.”
Steve was a great sailor and will certainly be missed by all who raced with and against him. We will miss you very much Steve.
A nice obituary was posted on the website Madison.com and can be viewed through the following link. http://madison.com/obit/188037 A memorial service will be held in Madison, Wisconsin on Thursday, April 14, 2011.

Team Racing in store for Spring Fling
By: jbolles
Posted On: 3/16/2011
As a way to build camaraderie in the class and keep things fun and exciting, the Spring Fling regatta this year will be a team racing event. If you have never done team racing before, here is some information you might find interesting:
Team racing is a form of sailboat racing where boats sail as teams of 2, 3 or 4 (3 being the most common) working together throughout the race. The goal of team racing is to achieve the lowest combined score to win a race, and have the most head to head wins of the event. Low point scoring is used, so each boat's score is equal to its finish position. For example, a 3 boat team finishing in 2nd, 3rd & 5th (=10 points) positions will win over a team finishing in 1st, 4th & 6th (=11 points). In order to develop a winning combination, team members can execute maneuvers like pass-backs and mark traps to put team mates in a better position. However, all the right of way rules continue to apply so team racing also requires a good knowledge of the Racing Rules of Sailing. Additionally, sailors need to continue to pay attention to wind shifts, puffs and make their boats go fast all while keeping track of team mates and developing plays.
There are many resources on team racing if you'd like to learn more. Wikipedia actually offers a nice brief overall snapshot with some useful web links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_racing. To get a look at some team racing tactics in action I'd suggest going to YouTube and searching on "Team Racing Tips" as there are many great videos available to view.
Whether you've team raced before or have never sailed a team race but are excited to try, come out to the I-20 Spring Fling at Wawasee. Sailors are welcome to form their own teams of 3 boats ahead of time. Or you can sign up as a single and the regatta organizers will team you up the weekend of the event. If you have questions about this event or format please feel free to contact the I-20 board members.

Spring Update
By: jbolles
Posted On: 3/14/2011
The 2011 season is upon us and looks to be a great year. We have 2 boat builders, Windward Boatworks, and Willie Crear. North Sails Zenda (Jim Gluek) are ready to provide sails to the fleet. Willie is working with another sail provider in Maine, Maine Sailing Partners. We will have to see his new main and jib.
Willie and John both have mast and bow sprit blanks, so there are plenty of spare parts out there. On the I-20 website we have 6 used boats for sale.
This year we have an outstanding opportunity, a new venue in Iowa. Clear Lake Yacht Club has invited us for the ILYA Invitational Regatta. Please make every effort to attend this regatta, as the racing on this lake is outstanding. 1.25 mile legs, not a lot of waves, no big boat traffic, and great people to host us.
Clear Lake is 4.5 Hours from Madison, Wisconsin. Harden up, cheeseheads, and make the cannonball run. Justin is coming all the way from eastern Indiana, and Anita has her visa to clear customs out of Detroit!

Don’t forget to look us up on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=328172443285&ref=ts
We will be updating the Facebook page in real time, and what a great way to give your competitors some pre-race flak, also a great way to get results out there quickly.

Carl Fritzner - I20 Race Officer & Friend Passes Away
By: abersie
Posted On: 3/5/2011
We have some sad news to report to the I-20 sailing community. Carl Fritzner, Mendota Yacht Club race officer and friend of the Inland20 class passed away on Tuesday, March 1st. Carl did an immense amount of race committee work for the class when we really needed it in the beginning of the class. Carl towed his race committee boat to many of our early events serving as both mark-set boat#2 and PRO at events. John Hayashi has these nice words to say about Carl, and I think all sailors would agree. "Had we not had his help I doubt we would be a class today. He was one of the few that believed in the beginning." Carl will certainly be missed by the many Inland20 sailors who knew him and sailed his race courses.
Carl's full obituary will appear in this Sunday's paper in Madison, Wisconsin. A service is planned for Saturday, March 12, 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 5001 North Sherman Ave.

Nationals Registration time!
By: Joe Terry
Posted On: 8/11/2010
Ahoy I-20 sailors!
What a season we're having! The Lake DuBay Sailing Association is hosting the 2010 National Championship on Friday through Sunday, September 17, 18, 19, 2010.
Registrations are being accepted right now, and we do have some boats registered.
There is an early registration deadline of August 31st to take advantage of the $25.00 registration discount.
Please note, shirts and meal plans are available ONLY via early registration. We're trying to provide the best value possible, and that means not wasting money on extra t-shirts and meals, so please, help me out by registering prior to August 31.
If you know you're coming, at least give me a call or e-mail prior to the deadline so we can accomodate you.
The sailing instructions will be posted soon, and if you take a look at the National Championship website you'll see we're bringing back a theme party for Saturday night. Honoring the Wisconsin northwoods, wear your favorite lumberjack flannel and there just might be a nice surprise for the best dressed lumberjack.
The notice of race can be found here, on the Inland20.org website, and for details on the lake, accommodations, and fun stuff, go to http://www.saildubay.org/Pages/2010_I-20_Nationals/2010_I-20_Nats.html
I hope everyone can make it, because I've ordered great weather, good winds, and fantastic competition to highlight the 2010 regatta season.
Fair winds and great sailing,
Joe Terry Regatta Chair

Wawasee's Junior Sailors Race I-20's
By: Justin Bolles
Posted On: 7/22/2010
I-20's were racing on Wawasee today! 12 children from the Advanced Junior Sailing class at Wawasee Yacht Club raced in a series of three races today on six I-20s. Junior Sailing coordinator Jeff Herdrich rounded up the I-20s as a way to introduce the 12 to 15 year olds to sailing with other people and to the asymmetrical spinnaker. The event was a huge hit and figures to be a permanent part of the Advanced program in years to come.
Congrats to Jeff for taking on a great initiative, thanks to all the I-20 owners at Wawasee who allowed their boats to be used for the day, and welcome to the 12 new I-20 sailors on Wawasee!

Experimental Status Granted
By: Justin Bolles
Posted On: 6/5/2010
Experimental status shall be granted to Willie Crear for the 2010 NISSA Sailing season, beginning January 1st 2010 (retroactively) and ending December 31st 2010. The scope of the experiment shall be limited to the rudder shape described in the e-mail petition dated May 28th, 2010 from williecrear@hotmail.com (attached). The experiment will be limited to one yacht owned by Willie Crear at this time. For the purposes of experimentation, the NISSA board will allow up to 2 addtional yachts to be sailed under the same experiment and conditions during the 2010 NISSA season provided the names of the additional yacht owners taking part in the experiment are provided to the NISSA Board prior to Race#1 of any NISSA event to be sailed in. Any yacht sailing under this experiment will be unscored in that regatta. The NISSA Board requests that Willie Crear provide a clear statement of the objective and goals of the experiment as required by the Experimentation section of the NISSA Scantlings. This explanation is required to support the membership's ability to judge the experiment for later voting purposes, should the experiment be judged successful. It is the recommendation of the NISSA Board that a proposal to permanently change the scantlings not be made nor voted on until the full season experiment is completed (not at 2010 Class Meeting in September). The purpose of this request is to allow the Board and the class members time to absorb the full season results, including Nationals, before casting a vote on change. It is also the expectation of the Board that Willie will be submitting the exact wording for the adjusted scantlings, should he deem the experiment a success, for class review before the 2011 Class Meeting. The NISSA Board would like to encourage Willie Crear to continue sharing information and findings of this experiment with class members throughout the season. As experimental status has not been granted frequently in the class, we would like this to be an example of a positive and inclusive event to further the class goals of "less hassle, more fun" sailing.

I-20's on Big Cedar
By: Justin Bolles
Posted On: 6/20/2009
With the first day of racing in the books, it is not hard to understand why I-20 sailors might be a little tired. With sunny skies, 10-12 MPH breeze, and 85 degree temperatures at Cedar Lake, WI one could definitely leave the foul weather gear at home. Even the most fair weather sailor would have to admit, this is picture perfect weather. And with picture perfect weather comes picture perfect sailing. The wind direction would only allow for 1/2 mile courses, so a lot of laps were necessary this weekend. The first two races were sailed back to back in shifty and gusty winds, each requiring five laps before you could be done. After 10 spinnaker sets and takedowns, the I-20 fleet was ready for lunch. Aaron Lynn and Steven Catlin traded 1st and 2nds the first two races, with John Spargo not far behind. The afternoon brought more breeze and more great racing. The first race was an endurance race, as the I-20 counted 6 laps before the winning gun went off. The big breeze and short courses made for quick rides downwind. The fourth and final race of the day was 4 laps, with Aaron Lynn winning both afternoon races. With 20 sets and takedowns in their pockets, the I-20s sailors are dialed in and a little worn out. One more race awaits tomorrow, with much of the standings yet to be decided, so stay tuned! Sunday had the same
sunny skies and high temps, but the wind was a little softer. A light,
shifty breeze of 4 to 6 MPH made the course challenging. Catching the
right puff heading downwind could mean the difference between winning
the race and fading to the back of the pack. Steven Catlin once again
made all the right calls on Sunday's lone race, but it was Aaron Lynn
who would prevail for the weekend.
A special thanks to Rick Trester and the
Cedar Lake Yacht Club. The event was first class and even
with the wind direction being a little big difficult, the race
committee did a great job. Congratulations to Aaron Lynn, the 2009 ILYA Invite Champion.
Check out the photos from the weekend here. Results are on the Regatta Pages.

Day 1: With temps hovering in the low 50's and the wind out of the North the fleet got in three races in a variety of conditions. The first two races were won by Willie Crear, with both Andy Gratton and Aaron Lynn close on his heels. The big race of the day goes to Jack and Eric Boatman. To beat three different heavy air specialists and win the final race of the day is quite the accomplishment. Way to go. Willie leads the regatta overall for now.

A note from our Sail maker
By: Justin Bolles
Posted On: 5/21/2009
Inland 20 Sailors,
I wanted to check in to let you know great Inland 20 sails are still available,
they may have a different patch these days but the patterns and shapes remain
the same. I have been committed from the beginning of the class to providing quality
service and sail design for the I-20 sailors, this will remain the same into
the future. My life has changed somewhat in the past few months but for the
I-20 class things are looking really positive. My new position is the same as
my previous position, that being to support you the sailor and your class the
Inland 20 class.
North Sails has stepped up to the plate and has started the process of getting
your shapes and patterns into their system so that new sails can come rolling
down for all the up and coming regatta's
this summer. With the vast knowledge of North and with my experience of
supplying the class quality sails for the past 10 seasons I look forward to
going into the future.
This summer I look forward to sailing more and supporting the class and its
sailors. We are hoping to get a new set of sails out on the water in the next
few weeks so that we can put them through their paces. I will keep everyone
informed of how that goes.
I am looking forward to seeing you all at the next regatta.
Sincerely,
Jim Gluek

Cedar Lake Regatta Rocks!
By: jhayashi
Posted On: 5/20/2009
In the classic vein of most Inland 20 regattas we had a great day of heavy air sailing and a nice mix of medium on Sunday, what more could you ask for. Many other regattas and classes did not sail on Saturday do to the extreme high winds, I guess the I's defied the trend. The stories that will be told of the party and also the heavy air racing on Saturday should become legend in the class. I have been going to class regattas for a long time and this was one of the best, thanks to Pat Kardos and the Cedar Lake YC for hosting us and going above and beyond, everyone really appreciated it. I do not want to take away any more from the lake drinking regatta winner so he can fill in the blanks and give the blow by blow.
PS. My 2012 Olympic diving campaign is now in full swing.

ILYA minutes
By: jterry
Posted On: 3/1/2009
Ahoy I-20 sailors,
I'd like to thank those who represented the I-20 class and ILYA at the Winter Inlands.
I'm also proud to know that we have a tentative bid for the 2010 I-20 ILYA invitational at Neenah. As a point of clarification, the I-20 class sailed the ILYA I-20 Invitational at Neenah in 2001 and were treated very well.
I'm also proud to announce that we have tentative ILYA Championship venues of Lake Mendota in 2010 and Green Lake in 2011.
As we move forward to fill our season calendars, if your sailing club is interested in bidding for a venue, please contact one of the officers.
Having venues lined up well in advance demonstrates the strength of the class, and we're sure glad to see you and your clubs being active. Keep up the good work!
Spring is getting near, and so is an exciting new I-20 sailing season!

ILYA Inland 20 Winter meetings
By: Geoff Catlin
Posted On: 2/28/2009
09 ILYA Winter Inlands I20 Fleet Meeting Minutes:
Attendees: Dave Whealon from Fondulac, Scott Baccus from Fondulac, Aaron Lynn from Oshkosh, Geoff Catlin from Neenah, John and Mimi Hayashi from Green Lake and Rick Trester attending from the Inland Board.
Regattas:
09 Joint I20 Invite & M16 Champs at Cedar Lake, WI: a great venue and
a new experiment for the fleets and the Inland organization by having
two classes racing at the same venue.
10 I20 Invite: locations and venues were talked about and Neenah was
selected to be asked to host. The last time Neenah hosted an ILYA
regatta, it was in M20s
10 I20 Champs set for Geneva: much discussion about this venue with its
great assets but relatively high costs and Mendota was picked as the
preferred site to be asked to host this regatta
11 I20 Invite: locations from Fondulac to Cedar Lake, Indiana were
discussed
11 I20 Champs: Minnetonka doesn’t have the assets to host our fleet with the
rest of the adult fleets, so locations were discussed from Green Lake,
Fondulac, to Wawasee in Indiana.
ILYA Official Measurer:
No help was requested from the measurer at this years regatta venues.
The ILYA requested fleet position on any restriction on the number of sails that
can be used at any one regatta was discussed: the National Classes bylaws
will be controlling with two jibs & mains with one chute allowed.
Race Committee Recommendations:
No changes were requested at this time
The Builders Report:
John talked of the new five boat fleet starting in Green Lake, with Thursday
night and Saturday morning racing for $45 dues. Windward Boat-
works also will have a spec. boat ready by April 1st for quick sale and
one other new boat has been ordered for the coming season.
The Inlands proposed bylaws for its various fleet committees was differed to the
Fleet Committee.
