The 2001 Inland Lake Yachting Association Championship Regatta was held this year on beautiful Lake Minnetonka with its historic Yacht Club and scenic shoreline. The hospitality that the club and their volunteers provided was incredible, with every boat having a home dock to moor to. The meals and social events were wonderful.

The first race turned out to be more of a race of wills. Light and variable winds made it anybody's race. Emily Green had an incredible start and quickly pushed to a commanding lead over the fleet. You could almost hear her laughing as she drove over the fleet to the right side of the course. Much to her dismay, and most of the fleet’s, the wind shut off and the right side became a parking lot. Being at the tail end of the fleet, we noticed home lake specialist Dayton Walker on a good port tack going up left center. We followed him and were able to avoid the parking lot and round the first pin in third. The wind again shut off and it was interesting seeing one boat close hauled a couple of boat lengths from one with a full chute, going the same direction. Dayton Walker held on as we drifted around the course, followed by David Kickhafer and us, until we got to the last leeward pin. A favorable shift allowed our boat, along with Stefan Schmidt, to pass the leaders and cross the finish line within the time limit. Another note for light air; make sure you look up the lake so that rogue puff doesn’t surprise you. Hey, how's the water, Emily? Geoff?

The second race of the day was very similar to the first. The wind was slightly steadier and all the boats were a little more seasoned in the fluky stuff. The I-20's seemed to have the upper hand in the light winds because they could keep their speed up a little better in the variable winds. There were a couple of legs where the M-20 couldn’t carry a chute at all. In this race the I-20's prevailed with our boat taking first followed by John Spargo with Jim Brust, then Steve Scheck with Leigh Leonard.

The second day was even worse for wind. It came up enough for the RC to give us a start. Emery Sanford with Ally Binkowski had a comfortable lead at the first rounding with John Spargo and our boat close behind. We were able to run down to the leeward mark in what turned out to be the last few puffs of the day. With the rest of the fleet parked at the windward mark, John and I parked at the leeward mark and Emery hoisting his chute for the upwind, the RC was wise enough to call it off and we all towed in for the day.

The last two races were sailed in light to medium conditions (Scott even had to hike a few times!) and we were able to get the regatta in. My mathematician/crew Scott Noles kept me well informed of who we had to beat and who we had to cover and we were able to pull off our first ever regatta victory.

Thanks once again to the Minnetonka YC and its volunteers for their effort and hospitality. We look forward to a return visit in the future.
