2001 Sarasota Midwinters Regatta

I
am not sure which is more fun; staying in Wisconsin and watching as the snow turns to mud in late March, or the 40-plus-hour round-trip drive to Sarasota. The truth is, for the fourth year in a row, it is without a doubt the drive, and the Sarasota Sailing Squadron is a jewel of a place to visit. My usual cocaptain of the motorhome, Peter Huff (better known to his road tripping friends as "007”) and I had a great round-trip experience. Everyone really has to try to get to Florida, its the best.
A
s for the sailing, for this year the format was extended to a one-day tune-up regatta and a two-day Midwinters. The fleet was polled after sailing one race on Thursday in heavy air and all agreed that we should change the Midwinters series to Friday-Saturday-Sunday and a 6 race regatta. And that is what happened, which brings me to Regatta Reminder #1: Always read the official board for last minute changes.
F
riday was another wild day on Sarasota Bay as the wind was out of the north at 18 with gusts to 25. My new crew, Nadine Nassif, had been on a 2-year sabbatical from I -20 scow sailing but later agreed with me that getting thrown right back in the big air on Thursday and Friday was the best way, because there was no time to be nervous, and she did an awesome job. The big racing highlight on Friday must have been the start of the first race. It got messy when Peter Huff, who is well-trained in the Yost School of Barging, assumed that a hole would have to open up. With 30 seconds to go I realized Peter's intention and vocally assured him that he was in a bad place. Peter still believed that a hole would open up as they have for him in past regattas, but it was not to be. The RC was well-entertained with a very spirited, exciting, and close quarters start. In the future Pete might believe me. The wind was up and the racing was fun. Kyle and Liz Metzloff were sailing well and would have been hard to beat if Kyle had sailed to the right mark. This brings up Regatta Tip # 2: Always read the course board. Joe and LaCinda Terry, who we have not seen at a regatta since the 1999 Nationals, were having a great time flying down wind when a big wave grabbed their bow and they went for a swim and found out how slippery those fancy bilgeboards truly were.
S
aturday was the kind of day you could only dream of, it was perfect. With winds around 10 to 12 and gusts to 16, it was great. The racing was super with Al Pezoldt and John Hayashi charging hot to the corners, Kyle and Liz jibing over and going to the inside and Peter and Theresa sailing deep, deep. How and whom do you cover? In true I-20 fashion nobody was ever out of the race and there were many lead changes. Saturday was just one of those days that you will replay in your head and we got in 3 races. The regatta hosts were also selling photos from a helicopter as a reminder of a great day with friends on the water.
O
n Sunday the winds again were blowing down the bay at 19 - 22 and of all people to lead us off the dock, it was Joe and LaCinda, Al and John were next. It was cold and with a throw-out race, I thought we had the regatta win in the bag without even sailing, until on CH 78 we heard that they were going to try for 3 races. Nadine and I were suddenly in “hurry-up” mode to get in the boat and off the pier, and just barely made the start. This brings us to Regatta Tip #3: Always go out for every race. It was another big air and big wave day. In the first race Al and I had a great tacking duel, which was fun. I was glad he gave up because I think he was catching me. In race two, Al and John jibed the chute in a big puff and tipped, but amazingly they popped back up without missing a beat. Then I had to turn around to pick up my Tac-Tik compass which fell overboard! Needless to say, we had a great duel to the finish.
T
he Sarasota Midwinters is a great regatta and if you go a little early you can hit the golf course or the beach and it makes the drive well worth it. So who is up for next Year?!
