2003 Black Tie Regatta
Posted by: John Spargo
The 40th Annual
Black Tie Regatta was held at Rush Creek YC in Dallas, Texas on April 11 – 13, 2003. This is the second time the I-20 fleet had sailed in the Black Tie Regatta and the first time as a One-Design Class, and all of us found both the lake and the yacht club members terrific.
Known as the
Champagne of Regattas, the Black Tie Regatta always has been one of the greatest regattas to attend. Each spring, you can meet and compete with the best A, E, C, I-20 and MC scow sailors from around the country. The spring sailing weather is almost always superb(and is known for big winds) and the Saturday evening Black Tie Dinner Dance features the best in live entertainment and cuisine. Black Tie is optional!
Almost everyone arrived Thursday afternoon and evening to prepare for the first races which were scheduled for Friday afternoon. The remainder of the 13 boats and crews came in Friday morning.
On Friday morning, several boats went out to practice before the afternoon racing, and this turned out to be the best sailing of the day. The wind died by noon, and came back up slightly by the afternoon, at least enough to start a race. The I-20s and MCs shared the same course and marks. The first of two races was sailed in reasonable air, and Grant wowed everyone by winning this race by a large margin. The only problem for Grant was that he was scored DNS in that race for passing on the wrong side of a starting mark. The second race Friday afternoon turned out to be particularly interesting! The race committee observed that the wind was dying throughout the race, so they decided to shorten the course and finish us all at the leeward gate. By “all” this meant both the I-20s and the MCs. With basically the entire MC fleet (41 boats) and the entire I-20 fleet all crossing the finish line within about a minute, it became totally impossible for the race committee to determine who had finished and in what order. In fact, the only one about whom there was no doubt as to his finishing position was Grant, who led this race by as wide a margin as he had led the first race. After much discussion and consternation after race two, it was thrown out.
Saturday morning dawned as a beautiful sunny day, but the breeze was very light and fluky. There never was enough wind at any point during the day to start a race, so everyone simply waited around for wind, enjoying great conversation and good food.
Late in the afternoon, after all racing had been cancelled for the day, a number of I-20s decided there was enough wind for some short fun races. Eight boats went out in a light breeze and had a great time racing against each other and learning a lot, as John Hayashi jumped from boat to boat offering his usual excellent advice. Everyone had a wonderful time!
Sunday turned out to be the decisive day of the regatta. There were two races completed, and again Grant showed extremely impressive speed, solidly winning both races. Certainly but for his DNS in the first race, Grant would have won the regatta going away. By sailing consistently, however, Jim and I did end up first, with Alec (in his most impressive regatta to date) finishing second, and Paul and Steve third.
We speak for all sailors in thanking all of those involved in providing the racing we enjoyed. We also want to recognize and thank all of the Rush Creek Yacht Club members for providing great meals, a fantastic facility and all the help and support they provided the I-20 sailors and their families. This was a great regatta despite an extremely atypical wind pattern. Thanks to everyone!
Let’s just hope for the usual terrific winds at the 2004 Black Tie Regatta!
