I20 Inlands at Green Lake

T
he Green Lake Yacht Club hosted the Inland Lake Yachting Association's annual championship regatta. Eleven new Inland 20 scows competed against six conventional M-20's, racing the second half of the weeklong event, August 13-15. Sailing was to begin on Thursday, but due to the lack of wind, no races were completed. While Friday brought promising winds, a case of bad luck brought the racing into question. The first race was lead early by Madison favorite John Hayashi who worked up the north shoreline to lead around the first windward mark. After several lead changes the leeward mark floated away! The race committee allowed the race to stand after a heated protest hearing.
T
he Friday afternoon race started under very promising conditions. Paul Bates, sailing a Wisconsin Hoofer I20, was battling for the lead before the race committee canceled the race on the final leg after hearing several claps of thunder. The ILYA I20/M-20 annual meeting took place that evening and several topics were discussed along with the election of Grant Frautschi as the ILYA class representative. Thanks to the hard work of Grant, the ILYA has elected to invite the I20's to next year's event.
T
he final day of racing began with higher winds and the hope of completing at least two, if not three races before noon. The I20 class became excited after seeing a jibe mark was being placed in the water and an Olympic course being set. Sure enough the asymmetrical skippers were licking their chops and were soon proving it on the race course. While the conventional/old M-20's were struggling on the tight reaches, the new carbon poled boats were flying!!!! The Grant Frautschi-owned boat "Recycled" dominated the race from start to finish. Jaron Acker and Steve Yost showed impressive form in sailing the tight reaches. The final race began with great starts by Brian Anderson, Tom Lycett, and Jaron Acker. Jeff Kirchhoff assumed his usual spot at the top of the fleet for most of the race until a very unlucky wind shift on the last windward beat.
T
he I20 fleet would like to thank Kyle and Liz Metzloff for helping set up and tear down boats at registration, and special thanks to the Hayashi family for allowing a bunch of soggy sailors to bunk at their home.
Happy sailing.
